The Petersen Automotive Museum is a premiere location for the lowrider parade, a curated list of entrants parading their lowrider through Los Angeles in one of the largest cruises of the year. See every car drive past, and get the chance to see them up close when they park at the Petersen.

About the Panel

Denise M. Sandoval, Ph.D, Professor & Co-Curator of Best in Low

Denise M. Sandoval, Ph.D., is a Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at California State University, Northridge, since 2002. Holding a Cultural Studies doctorate from Claremont Graduate University (2003), she earned her Master's in Chicana/o Studies from CSUN in 1995 and a Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley in 1993. With expertise in lowrider culture, Dr. Sandoval has curated exhibitions at the Petersen Automotive Museum since 2000, collaborated on Smithsonian initiatives, and co-edited award-winning books, exemplifying her profound impact on ethnic studies and community engagement throughout her 25-year tenure in higher education.

Lorraine Quiñones, Lowrider Rights Advocate

In collaboration with others across the state of California, efforts began in 2021 to lift the ban on cruising statewide. The cruising is not a crime movement was a success and the ordinance was repealed on January 1, 2024. I cruised alongside my husband in our 1957 Bel Air throughout Los Angeles to gather signatures in support of ACR 176 & AB 436. Prior to that resolution & bill being established, I created a Change.org petition to demand the ban on cruising be lifted locally in East Los Angeles on the historic Whittier Blvd (over 8,000 signatures strong) due to discrimination of the local ordinance. When people saw our ‘57 Bel Air, Sweet Dreams, or the little green sign that read “Cruising is not a Crime,” at a local cruise, on social media, or in the news, they joined the fight & supported the movement. Lowriders changed law 01/01/2024 & it was an honor to begin that fight & represent Los Angeles.

Tina L. Blankenship-Early, First Lady of Lowriding

Tina L. Blankenship-Early has been a fixture of the Los Angeles low-riding scene for more than two decades. She got the nickname “First Lady of Super Naturals” because she was the first woman to join the car club. She is also the first woman inducted into the National Lowrider Hall of Fame (2012) and the first woman elected to Lowrider magazine’s Hall of Fame (2023), making her a “first lady” in that regard as well.

Cynthia Martinez, Lowrider Builder

Cynthia Martinez’s vicla was built by her husband, Gilbert Adelmann, who worked with Steady Custom Cycles to get bars and pipes to fit the older-model motorcycle. Martinez wanted her vicla to depict an Aztec princess—”a woman with strength, pride, and beauty.” She relayed this idea to Malo at Jrs Kustoms, who created the themed murals.

Sandy Avila, Lowrider Builder & President of the Lady Lowrider Car club

Sandy Avila is the owner of SimplyBeautiful, an 1984 Cutlass Supreme, which is currently on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum. SimplyBeautiful also graced the cover of the 2024 issue of the all women's issue of Lowrider magazine and Sandy is the President of Lady Lowrider Car Club.

2024 Road to Pebble Rally

Join the most exclusive rally during Monterey Car Week!

The 7-day experience begins in Malibu, California and winds its way up the coast, navigating some of the best driving roads that California has to offer. On the journey up to Carmel, the rally will stop at private collections rarely seen by the public.

During Monterey Car week, guests will receive access to all of the major Car Week events including Quail, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and the Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance. In addition to the main events, guests will have the ability to watch all of the big auctions and receive hospitality at various museum partnered locations.

Run of Show:

Rally Meeting Point: Breakfast at a private collection in Malibu with the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Day 1, Day 2: Private and exclusive collection tours in Malibu, Santa Barbara, and Pismo Beach, as well as scenic drives through canyons and countryside. These first two days are best described as the all-access pass to some of the most jaw-dropping collections in the United States, matched only by the routes we’ll be taking.

Day 3: Rally to Carmel-by-the-Sea, check in to hotel and shuttled to dinner at an elegant and top-tier restaurant, coveted in Carmel by residents and visitors alike. We’ll have the opportunity for a rest from the drive, before the festivities of the Monterey Car Week begin.

Day 4: With unfiltered access to private and scenic venues, with hospitality by automotive manufacturers, we’re celebrating the start of Monterey Car Week the right way. Highlights include breakfast with Porsche, an opportunity to attend the Broad Arrow Auctions, and an exclusive industry dinner celebrating 120 years of Hispano-Suiza.

Day 5: Day five is highlighted with our visit to Quail - A Motorsports Gathering. A Peninsula-hosted gathering with brands such as Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Bugatti, and many other illustrious car manufacturers. See new prototypes and concept cars, record-holding hypercars and supercars, as well as many one-of-one classic and vintage cars and restomods.

Day 6: Want to see rare historic collections actually drive? Then look forward to Saturday, where we’ll be heading out to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to watch the Historics racing event. Spectate as the most prestigious cars race each other on this iconic circuit and mingle with industry experts on how these cars are kept in such brilliant condition.

Day 7: The Grand Finale, the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance. The most coveted car show in the world, it begins with the optional Dawn Patrol at 5:30AM, where we uphold the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance tradition of the race to be first on the lawn of Pebble Beach. After the breathtaking sunrise, we convene at 10:30AM for a VIP breakfast, where we’ll then immerse ourselves in the mystique of the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.

About the Event

As the popularity of lowrider culture has grown in the United States and abroad, the skills involved in creating a lowrider vehicle have similarly advanced, with builders, painters, and metalworkers reaching new levels of artistry and craftsmanship. The Petersen Automotive Museum has celebrated this evolution since its first exhibition on lowriding in 2000 and continues to recognize the culture’s contributions to automotive history. With Best in Low, the Museum turns a lens on the creation of the car itself, as well as on the street and the show—spaces where the craft of lowriding is on full display.

The exhibition includes iconic lowrider vehicles and those newer to the scene, all featuring outstanding customization in various aspects of the lowrider build, from paint and metal finishing to interiors and hydraulics. The development of these techniques and practices over time is explored, and award-winning vehicles are featured.

Event FAQs

  • We send out instructions to all show cars the Friday before the event around 5 PM - 6 PM. Note: If you did not sign up for more info or news during the purchase, you will not receive an email. If you’d like to receive additional information, sign up for our newsletter or reach out to info@petersen.org no later then the Friday before the event.

  • For those wanting to display a vehicle as a show car - it must be a lowrider style vehicle, with no specific make or model. Generally, a lowrider is a vehicle that has been lowered on hydraulics, and often includes pinstriping, engravings, and other custom touches. So long as the car pays homage to the lowrider style or innovates upon it, we will consider it as a lowrider, but if the vehicle can be grouped into other categories (slammed or stance, for instance) we will not guarantee a show car spot. Those who bring vehicles who do not fit within these guidelines will not be allowed to park in the show car area, regardless of what ticket was purchased.
